Clyde and Avon Valleys May News

 

What a busy month we've had with Clyde Valley Blossom Day, New Lanark Food and Gift Fair and our CAVLP Spring Walks! It's been great getting out and about - meeting lots of new people, hearing YOUR stories and letting people know what projects we've been working on.


The inaugural CAVLP Spring Walks Festival 22 - 26 May was a great success, with 66 people walking 153 miles through the Clyde and Avon valleys with 9 of our expert partner guides! From legend and local lore to historical facts, future plans and an amazing variety of wildlife surrounding listed buildings, designed landscapes, orchards, ancient woodland and of course the Clyde and Avon rivers, each of the walks dipped in and out of different parts of the unique Clyde and Avon valleys' story. You can see photos from each of the walks on our Facebook and Twitter pages. Thanks to all who came , the fantastic guides and the sun that shone for most of the weekend! 

We were honoured to have Aileen Campbell MSP open the new Victorian Trail at Scottish Wildlife Trust Falls of Clyde as part of our CAVLP Spring Walks. To explore the hidden history of former Bonnington Estate which now forms the reserve, join us on another free guided tour on Friday 26th June (more below) or pick up a leaflet from the Reserve. In other news, we're delighted to announce the launch of the Heritage Lottery Fund and Renewable Energy Fund supported Carluke Young Gallery - Citizen Science project with all of the Primary Schools in the Carluke learning community. The children have  been surveying the local area with South Lanarkshire Council Countryside Rangers and creating artworks inspired by their findings with Impact Arts. Join us to enjoy their marvellous creations on Saturday 20th June for the final pop-up exhibition at Carluke Market Square (more details below).

A project offering an amazing glimpse at the history of RSPB Scotland Baron's Haugh has been completed featuring excavations, historic walkways and replanting of ancient parkland and orchards.

Easily accessible from Motherwell, Hamilton and Wishaw, over 40 local volunteers contributed to the project with just under 500 hours of work.

The recently completed works were enjoyed by the attendees of the CAVLP Spring Walks: Spring Walk at Baron's Haugh, led by RSPB Scotland Warden Stephen Owen.

Interpretation boards featuring information on the history of RSPB Scotland Baron's Haugh will be installed on site soon. Why not take a walk down and see for yourself! Read more here.
Following theoutstanding success of the previous training programme, Clydesdale Community Initiatives (CCI) have been awarded £45,000 by the Scottish Government's People and Communities Fund for environmental training projects throughout the Clyde and Avon Valleys.

Funded until April 2016, 168 free sessions will be delivered on a range of environmental and conservation tasks such as path building and invasive species control, focussing on the features that make the local area unique. Opportunities for volunteers to undertake formal training certificates in disciplines from chainsaw skills to pesticide applications are also available.

What can two willing bodies, some powerful cutting equipment, funding from Central Scotland Green Network Trust and CAVLP and a solar eclipse achieve?

Turning 4 acres of whin and brush into one of the biggest apple orchards in the Clyde Valley at Kirkfieldbank, that's what! The Clyde Valley Orchard Group (CVOG) (recently re-established as a social enterprise) have now planted 162 new apple, pear and plum trees alongside around 40 older fruit trees that already existed on the land that had fallen into disuse over the years.

Now home to over 25 varieties of apple, plum and pear, the crops will provide good, quality fruit for CVOG's development activities in the future. Look out for CVOG pressed apple juice later in the year!

Duncan Shanks Sketchbooks, until 16th August, Tuesday - Saturday 10am - 5pm and Sunday 11am - 4pm, Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow. Explore the recently bequeathed sketchbooks of leading Scottish landscape artist Duncan Shanks whose work includes a focus on the Clyde valley. FREE admission.

Falls of Clyde Peregrine Watch, until 21st June, daily, 10am - 4pm, Scottish Wildlife Trust Falls of Clyde. Visit Britain's best peregrine watch site to view the peregrines nesting in the woodland gorge. Follow the 30 min self guided peregrine clue trail to the Ranger manned mini outdoor visitor centre. Strathaven Festival of Sport and Leisure, Saturday 30th May, 10am - 4pm, John Hastie and George Allan Parks, Strathaven. Try out a range of sporting activities and hear about a range of sporting opportunities in the area. Coaches in tennis, hockey, basketball, golf, bowling, rugby, football and canoeing will be on hand, along with Avondale Beekeepers, Avondale Angling Club, the Army Cadets, Stonehouse Equestrian Club and live music! FREE admission.

Falls of Clyde Guided Victorian Trail, Friday 26th June, 1:30 - 4pm, Scottish Wildlife Trust Falls of Clyde. Last in a series of 3 free walks celebrating the launch of the new Victorian Trail. Join storyteller and folklorist Allison Galbraith on a leisurely stroll through the mists of time on former Bonnington Estate, now Falls of Clyde Reserve.  Victorian treats of limeleaf tea and fudge provided!
